Wu Li & Organised Energy

The Chinese concept Wu Li is usually translated as physics, but its deeper meaning is far more poetic.

It can be broken down into:

  • Wu (物) – things, matter, phenomena

  • Li (理) – pattern, order, organising principle

So Wu Li can be understood as:

“The patterns that organise the universe.”

Modern physics shows that what we call matter is actually structured energy.

This idea came into mainstream science through Albert Einstein and his equation E = mc², showing that matter and energy are fundamentally the same thing.

Which means:

The universe is energy organised into patterns.

And humans are one of those patterns.

The Wu Li interpretation

In the book The Dancing Universe, physicist Gary Zukav explains that Wu Li can be interpreted in several playful ways:

  • Physics

  • Patterns of organic energy

  • My way

  • My nonsense

This reflects the mystery of reality — that the universe behaves like an organised dance of energy patterns.

Bringing the ideas together

If we combine modern physics with this philosophical view:

  • The universe is energy

  • Patterns organise that energy

  • Life is one of those patterns

So you could say:

We are organised energy forming temporary patterns in the great Wu Li of the universe.

Or even more simply:

You are not just a body that contains energy.

You are a pattern of energy organised into the experience of being human.

Why this matters for healing and consciousness

Practices such as meditation, breathwork and Reiki focus on changing the organisation of energy rather than forcing physical change directly.

When the pattern shifts, the system often reorganises.

This is why calm, coherence and regulation of the nervous system can change how the body functions
